A simple guide so you don't miss the window
Let me guess. You have been meaning to book maternity photos for weeks now. Maybe months.
You keep thinking you will do it when your belly is bigger. When work slows down. When you figure out what to wear.
And then suddenly you are 35 weeks pregnant and the idea of standing in front of a camera sounds exhausting.
So here is the truth about timing. When to take the photos. And when to actually book them.
When to take them
Most maternity sessions happen between 28 and 34 weeks.
That is when your belly is round and visible. You can still move around, change clothes, and stand for more than ten minutes without needing to pee.
Earlier than that, the bump might not show.
But this is not a rigid rule.
If you are expecting twins or showing early, you might want to book sooner. If you feel great at 36 weeks, we can make it work. I have photographed people on their due date. So do not panic about missing the window. t’s never too late to reach out once you decide you want to keep these memories.
What matters most is how you feel. If you are comfortable, the photos will show it - and helping you feel comfortable in front of the camera is exactly what I do.
When to book
This is where most people get caught off guard.
Reach out in your second trimester. Around 16 to 24 weeks is ideal.
Why so early? Because photographer schedules fill up.
Booking early also gives us time to talk. Where you want to shoot. What you want to wear. What kind of feeling you want the photos to have. Those conversations should not happen when you are exhausted and just want to lie down.
What if you are already 30+ weeks?
Take a deep breath. You have not missed anything.
Send me a message. I will tell you what I have available. We can make it work. It might mean a slower pace, fewer outfit changes, and more breaks. But we will get beautiful photos.
I have done plenty of last minute maternity sessions. They are always worth it.
A note about Chicago weather
If you want outdoor maternity photos, Chicago weather needs to be part of the plan.
Fall is gorgeous. Fall books up fastest. Winter is not ideal for outdoor sessions, but indoor maternity photos can be just as beautiful. The light in your home might surprise you.
If your due date is in spring or summer, reach out now. If your due date is in fall, do not wait.
The bottom line
You do not have to have everything figured out before you reach out. You do not need the perfect outfit, the perfect location, or the perfect pose.
Take the first step to documenting this pregnancy - afterall, it only happens once. Send a message. We will figure out the rest together.
If these photos resonate with you, please reach out. I would love to create something magical with you.
